Embedding social value in the design process

Through our work over the last decade – and listening to designers, planners and residents  – we have identified a gap in capacity in the built environment sector to integrate social value goals throughout the design, engagement, procurement, construction and management of making places. It is still uncommon for social value requirements to be directly connected to and embedded in the project itself and the place it will create.

One consequence is that new and regenerated places fail to meet the everyday needs of local communities,

Social Life is developing a new programme of work with architects and urban designers to embed social values into the design process of the built environment. This report outlines the work we would like to do and our rationale.

This is an updated version of the paper that we first published in November 2022
