Our work is about the relationship between people and places. We specialise in research and community projects exploring how people are affected by changes in the built environment.

Social Life works in a number of different ways:

  • Research about people and places: we used mixed-methods - including ethnography, neighbourhood surveys, asset mapping and big data - to explore how people feel about their neighbourhoods and how they are being affected by changes in the built environment.
  • Community participation in design: we carry out intensive community-based projects to involve residents in imagining, planning and designing new housing, public spaces, community facilities and local services.
  • Social sustainability assessments: we work with planners, architects, housing providers and local authorities to measure social sustainability and to understand the long-term social impact of new urban development, regeneration programmes and neighbourhood initiatives.
  • Training and education: the team are teach at different universities on planning, urban design and architecture courses.

We are now setting up Social Life Practice CIC to take translate our deep insight from over a decade's work in local neighbourhoods into tangible, place-based action. The CIC is designed to deliver grounded, lasting impact by dedicating resources to long-term work that work towards systemic change.

The CIC allows us to stay embedded in the places and issues that we care about, ensuring that social value is not just measured, but actively created.

Since 2012 we have carried out pro-bono or very low cost projects to support communities affected by urban development. Read more about our pro-bono work here.
