Developing a Decent Neighbourhood Standard

This report was commissioned by Witton Lodge Community Association and developed in collaboration with the Centre for the New Midlands. This launches our shared programme of work to develop a meaningful, practical and collaborative framework for measuring and improving neighbourhood quality.

Neighbourhoods are not just physical spaces – they are socially constructed environments that shape the daily lives and wellbeing of communities. At a time of renewed political and policy focus on hyper-local neighbourhood conditions and impacts on communities, we believe now is the moment to define what makes a neighbourhood “decent.” ·

The Decent Neighbourhood Standard builds on the legacy and spirit of the Decent Homes Standard, but expands it to reflect the broader physical, social and environmental determinants of neighbourhood quality.
