Community designers for climate action

Social Life Practice CIC is partnering with the Design Council and community parters in Glasgow, Plymouth, Sheffield and south London to accelerate local action to tackle the climate emergency. We will work alongisde our partners and local residents and train a cohort of Community Designers who will develop campaigins, proposals and prototypes to accelerate local climate action.

Our partners are New Future in Glasgow; Nudge Community Builders and Real Ideas in Plymouth; Sheffield CLT and Pembroke House in Walworth. The University of Glasgow and University of Plymouth are also supporting the programme.

Social Life Practice CIC's role is to train and support the Community Designers over three years to develop actions that make a difference that are grounded in daily experience of the local communities. The project aims to embed climate action in the planning, design and delivery of housing across England and Scotland.

All four locations are experiencing significant housing growth that risks conflicting with local needs and climate ambitions, alongside high levels of deprivation that intensify the impacts of climate change on everyday life. The project aims to establish community-led roles, tools and pathways that enable residents to articulate priorities and co-design solutions. At a national level, learning from the four pilots will be shared to influence planning policy and practice.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Neighbourhood Futures: Community Designers for Climate Action has received £1.4 million over three years from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK.

This funding comes from the Climate Action Fund, a long-term commitment to support communities across the UK to act on climate change and involve more people in positive environmental action.
